Your Favorite Children’s Books?

One of my employees is about to go on maternity leave, as we ready for her baby shower, we decided to create a gift theme. What else but “Favorite Children’s Books.” Many of my staff have been discussing which book they will choose to give but I am at a loss. Even with 3 children, too many books to count at home, and a company that works with publishers, I find I am unable to choose that special book that stands out from the rest.

So I’ve decided to turn to you—Which book would you choose and why?

I have often given board book editions of GOODNIGHT GORILLA and MORE, MORE, MORE SAID THE BABY as presents to new babies. These were two beloved books of my older son. He never tired of having these books read to him. When I was pregnant with him, I, too, had a book shower, which was thrown by my colleagues in the school where I taught English at the time. We received an enormous range of books, and a number of them were beautiful hard cover editions of classics (e.g. CHARLOTTE’S WEB), which we probably wouldn’t have bought ourselves in the hard cover format. If you wanted to get books the baby would enjoy later, I would recommend anything by William Steig and Cynthia Rylant. I sometimes also look at the Caldecott winners list as a place to find beautiful picture books that would be worth getting in hard cover as gifts.

I always loved Sandra Boynton’s board books, especially “The Going to Bed Book.” The rhymes have such a great cadence I want to call them lyrics. And it’s easy to play finger games with the words…

The sun has set not long ago,
Now everyone goes down below

To take a bath in one big tub
With soap all over - scrub, scrub, scrub.

I don’t have the book with me, but I still remember the lyrics from 10 years ago (just forgive my punctuation.)

Hope this helps.
